Airlines typically release international schedules roughly 9 to 11 months out, and that window is when seat selection and the best fares are widest open. Flights control every other decision: the dates, the arrival time, how wrecked everyone is on day one. We lock these in first, before lodging, every time.
Lodging, right behind flights.
Family-sized rooms and two-bedroom apartments sell out well before standard doubles do, so this is not a step to leave for later. Once flight dates are set, we go straight to filtering for enough space and a walkable location, the same constraint covered in our own booking-order notes on planning a trip.

Why book flights before lodging?
Flights control everything else: the dates, the arrival time, how wrecked everyone is on day one. Locking those in first is the same order we use when booking trips for clients, and it prevents booking a great apartment for dates a flight cannot actually match.
When should passports be handled in the process?
Before booking anything, ideally. A passport that is expired, about to expire, or belongs to a child who has never had one can take weeks to sort out, and many countries deny entry if a passport expires within six months of the return date even with valid trip dates.
Is it too late to book a trip a few months out?
Not at all, it just means fewer flight and lodging options at the best prices. A trip booked a few months out is still very doable; it trades some choice for convenience compared to booking closer to the 9 to 11 month mark.
