How we make money,
in plain language.
Three sources: affiliate commissions on some links, a flat-fee trip planning service, and the Tails Around the Globe picture books. Here is exactly how each one works and what it does not buy.
Affiliate links.
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and book or buy something, we may earn a commission from that company. It costs you nothing extra: the price is the same as it would be if you went direct. We are a participant in several affiliate programmes, and where a link earns us something it carries a sponsored attribute in the markup and sits below a visible disclosure on that page.
Two things we want to be concrete about. Most disclosure pages are written to be legally sufficient rather than actually informative:
Every affiliate link on this site points at something we have paid for and travelled with as a family. We do not link to products we have not used, and we do not run roundups of things we have only read about.
The nonstop route reference, the packing list, the school vacation dates and most of the destination guides carry no affiliate links at all. They are the pages we are proudest of, which is worth knowing when you are weighing whether to trust the ones that do.
The planning service.
Custom itineraries start at $499. That is a flat fee you pay us directly. We are not a travel agency, we hold no supplier relationships, and we do not book anything on your behalf, which means we earn nothing from your hotel, your airline or your rental car. You keep every reservation, every cancellation policy and every loyalty point in your own name.
This matters more than it sounds. A traditional agency is paid by the suppliers it books you into, which creates a quiet pull toward the properties that pay best. We are paid by you, so the only thing we have to optimise is whether you are happy enough to tell someone.
The books.
We write the Tails Around the Globe picture books, starting with Rosie in Paris, and we earn a royalty when one sells. They are self-published, so that royalty is the whole business model. When we link to the book from a destination page, we are linking to our own product, and we would rather say that plainly than bury it.
Tell us when we are wrong.
A lot of this site is flight routes, opening hours and prices, and all of those decay. We put a verified date on anything that changes and re-check the route pages before each school vacation week, but things will still slip through. If you find something stale or wrong, email kyle@nowhereonearth.com and we will fix it and say so. Corrections are the email we most want to get.
What families ask us.
Do you earn money from the links on this site?
On some of them, yes. If you book or buy through certain links we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Those links are marked as sponsored and the page carries a disclosure above the first one. Plenty of links on this site earn us nothing at all.
Does a commission change what you recommend?
No, and the structure is deliberately set up so it cannot. We recommend from what we have used with our own kids, then attach a link if a programme happens to exist. Several things we recommend most often, including the nonstop route list and the packing list, pay us nothing.
Do you accept free trips or paid placements?
No. We do not currently accept paid placements, sponsored destination coverage, or comped stays given in exchange for coverage. If that ever changes, the page carrying it will say so at the top, in the same size type as everything else on the page, rather than in a footnote.
Are you a travel agency?
No. We hold no supplier relationships and we never book anything on your behalf, so we take no commission on your reservations. The paid planning service is a flat fee you pay us directly, which is exactly why it does not distort what we recommend.
