Cape Ann: Gloucester and Rockport, under an hour.
Cape Ann is the lowest-commitment trip on our whole Boston list, and the only one genuinely built for a single day. Under an hour each way means you can leave after breakfast and still have a full afternoon on the water, with real beaches and a walkable harbor town that does not need a hotel booked months in advance. Park once in Gloucester or Rockport and the rest of the day is on foot.
Newport, Rhode Island: about 1.5 hours.
Newport is a strong second choice, still well inside day-trip range. The Cliff Walk works with kids as young as 5 if you are comfortable holding hands on the narrower stretches, and the harbor itself is entertainment on its own without needing a planned activity. It gets busy in summer, so a shoulder-season visit makes for an easier day with young kids than a July weekend does.

Cape Cod sits at 1.5 to 2 hours each way, which technically fits inside a day trip but does not leave much room once you subtract the drive. It is also long enough that it cuts out the Martha's Vineyard ferry day that makes our full Cape Cod guide worth reading. If the Cape is genuinely the goal, we would treat it as an overnight rather than squeeze it into a single day; if you just want the closest real beach day, Cape Ann gets you there in a third of the drive.
