The Cape's real draw with young kids is the water: calm, shallow bay beaches rather than the surf side. Add one day on Martha's Vineyard, built around the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs, and it is a genuinely easy family week. This one is built on research and years of knowing the Cape well as adults, not yet a specific trip we have run with our own girls, so we are telling you that plainly rather than pretending otherwise.
Bay side, not surf side, with little kids.
Cape Cod has two very different beach personalities. The Atlantic-facing National Seashore beaches on the outer Cape have real surf, cold water and undertow, beautiful, but a lot for a small kid. The bay-side beaches facing Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound are the better pick with young children: calmer, shallower, and noticeably warmer by midsummer. Base a trip around one of those and the beach itself does most of the entertaining.
Martha's Vineyard, built around Oak Bluffs.
The ferry from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard is short, well under an hour, and the crossing itself is part of the fun for kids rather than a chore. Oak Bluffs is the town to build the day around: walkable from the ferry, and home to the single best kid-specific attraction on the island.
Hand-carved, built in 1876, and the oldest continuously operating platform carousel in the country. Riders can reach for a brass ring for a free extra ride, a tradition generations of kids have grown up with. It sits right at the start of Circuit Avenue, so it fits naturally into a walking day.
Oak Bluffs has genuine outdoor harbor-front dining where kids can watch the boats while you eat. Mad Martha's, a Circuit Avenue ice cream institution with locations in Oak Bluffs and Edgartown, is the reliable pick, cash only, seasonal, so check it is open for the dates you are traveling. Murdick's Fudge has been a Circuit Avenue tradition since 1887; confirm current hours before building a stop around it, since seasonal island shops change their schedules year to year.
