The other filter is drive time: distances look short on a map and take longer in the car once you account for stops at a waterfall or a photo break with kids. A rental car is non-negotiable either way; Reykjavik itself is walkable, but the Golden Circle and the south coast are not.

Is a second base worth it for a longer trip?
Yes, if the trip runs closer to two weeks. Adding a second base in Vik on the south coast cuts daily driving significantly and puts waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, plus the black-sand beach, within easy reach.
What should we filter for beyond the neighborhood?
