Athens for the history, Naxos for the beaches. What we actually filter for is simpler than picking a neighborhood: a kitchen, a washer, and an honest look at how the ferry schedule lines up with the flight.
Athens first, then one island, settled in.
Walkable to the Acropolis, Plaka and Monastiraki. Two to three days is plenty before heading to the water, so the base only has to work for a short stretch.
Long sandy beaches, shallow water, a real working town. The island we would send a family to first, with Paros a close second.
Kitchen, washer, and the ferry gap.
A kitchen and a washer matter here the same way they do in any destination. What is different about Greece is the ferry: a flight rarely lines up with the next boat, so we plan for the gap rather than fighting it. On arrival, if the flight lands too late for a same-day ferry, we stay at the airport hotel and catch a fresh ferry the next morning. On the way out, we do the reverse: ferry back a day early and stay near the port rather than risk a same-day connection with kids.
