Where should a family go for fall
in New England?
Ranked by drive time from Boston, the same system we use for weekend getaways year round. In the fall, the two farthest options on that list, the Berkshires and the White Mountains, move up: both sit in the peak-color band and both are built for a foliage weekend.

The reliable list, in the order most families work through it: apple picking, a cider donut, a corn maze, a county fair, and the first cold-weather hike of the year. None of it needs a reservation, and most of it is a two-hour visit rather than a full day, which matters with a toddler.

Most family farms open a maze alongside the orchard in October. Go before 1pm with young kids. The evening flashlight versions are built for older kids and teenagers.

Yes, with one adjustment: go on a weekday if you can, or arrive by 9am on a weekend. Leaf-peeper traffic on routes like the Kancamagus Highway can turn a scenic 45 minutes into two hours, which matters far more to a toddler than the foliage does. The color itself is genuinely beautiful and genuinely low-effort. The traffic is the only part that isn't.
What if you miss peak?
Chase it south. If northern New Hampshire has already dropped its leaves, southern Massachusetts and coastal Connecticut are often still a week or two from peak. The region's six-week spread is a feature here, not a limitation, and it's the one thing none of the foliage-tracker sites tell you to do.
