Boothbay Harbor was the trip that proved this site's format works, but it is not the only Maine coast we know. Portland and Bar Harbor are two more towns we have actually taken the girls to, and they earn a spot on the map for very different reasons.
Portland: walkable, working, and forgiving of a picky eater.
The Old Port is compact and walkable, a real working waterfront rather than a tourist set piece, with lighthouses a short drive away and enough food variety that a picky eater is never the crisis it could be somewhere with fewer options. It is close enough to Boothbay Harbor and the rest of the Midcoast to fold into the same trip as a single extra day, rather than needing its own dedicated weekend.
Bar Harbor and Acadia: worth its own weekend.
Acadia National Park has genuinely easy, short trails alongside its bigger ones, and the drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain needs no hiking at all, which makes the park's signature view accessible to a family with a toddler in tow. Bar Harbor itself is a real walkable town for food and a break between park time. It sits roughly 4 to 5 hours from Boston, further than Boothbay or Portland, so we would treat it as its own weekend rather than a stop tacked onto a shorter trip.
