Summer opens the valley up completely: every cable car running, every trail clear, mild days for a stroller or a short hike. Winter turns the same valley into a ski trip, a real option, just a different one.

The sweet spot

June through September.

This window keeps the Lauterbrunnen Valley's waterfalls, cable cars to Murren and Grindelwald, and village walks fully open and comfortable, without the deep snow that limits access the rest of the year. It is the same season our own guide's home-base plan is built around.

The winter trade-off

A ski trip, not a hiking trip.

Winter turns Switzerland into a ski destination: lift tickets, cold-weather gear, and daylight that ends by mid-afternoon. It suits a family that already skis, or is ready to start, more than a first trip with very young kids still napping mid-day. Either season, the trip runs on the higher end of our published cost ranges; timing changes what is open, not much of the price.
