Summer vacation places for families,
nonstop from Boston.
Our favorite summer trip so far was a July week in a car-free Swiss village with a 1-year-old, riding cogwheel trains between waterfalls. That trip set the test for this list: somewhere that stays mild in July, keeps kids outside all day, and starts with a nonstop from Logan.
Flight times and frequencies match our Direct From Boston scorecards. Check the season’s schedule before you book.
What are good family summer vacations from Boston?
Switzerland’s Lauterbrunnen Valley first, because we have done it in July with a baby and would book it again. The Azores, Iceland and Ireland follow, all mild in summer and all a nonstop of about 5 to 6 hours. Save the Algarve and Greece for June or September.
| Top pick | Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland: SWISS nonstop to Zurich, about twice a day |
|---|---|
| Shortest flight | The Azores: about 5 hours to Ponta Delgada |
| Coolest summer | Iceland: days in the 50s to low 60s, near round-the-clock light in June |
| Best road trip | West coast of Ireland: Aer Lingus 2 to 3 times daily to Dublin |
| No passport, no flight | Northern New England: beaches, Story Land and lake days |
| Wait for September | The Algarve and Greece, to skip August heat and crowds |
Summer turns the winter question
upside down.
Our winter list is a hunt for heat. In summer the problem flips: a lot of Europe is at its hottest and most crowded exactly when New England schools let out. So we rank on two questions, in this order.
If the answer is “only in a pool,” the trip turns into nap schedules around the heat. Mountains, islands in the Atlantic and anywhere north of about Dublin pass easily.
Five hours to the Azores or Reykjavik is a different trip from 11 with a connection. Summer helps here: Logan’s seasonal routes to Nice, Milan, Barcelona, Edinburgh and London Gatwick only fly this time of year.
Summer family vacation ideas,
ranked honestly.
We went in July with a 1-year-old and based ourselves in Wengen, the car-free village up the cogwheel train from Lauterbrunnen. Everything was running, the paved valley paths took the stroller, and the trains and cable cars kept her entertained between waterfalls. June through September is the window when every lift and trail is open. Pack layers, because the weather turns fast at altitude. Swiss rentals run high, so book early.
Full guideThe shortest transatlantic flight from Logan. We road-tripped São Miguel twice with the girls: the warm Terra Nostra pool, the Furnas hot springs and the crater lakes at Sete Cidades. July to September brings the warmest sea. August is the busiest month, so book the car early.
The coolest summer on the list: days in the 50s to low 60s, and around the June solstice it never gets fully dark, so pack something for blackout. We went in September with an 8 to 9 month old, not in July, and our glacier hike near Vík was a highlight. Save that one for kids about 8 to 10 and up.
After four trips, our plan is always the same: fly in, rent a car, and give the west coast a week. The highlight for our kids was holding the little lambs at the farms along the Slea Head drive. Summer is the priciest window for flights and lodging, and US customs preclearance in Dublin makes the trip home easy.
A real beach week, but we would not do it in August. We took the girls to Lagos in mid-September and it was the best time of year we could have picked: warm enough to swim every day, with the summer crowds gone. Late May and June work too, with cooler water.
The summer trip we take most is the one with no airport. Our New England summer starts with the girls on the tide-pool rocks at Long Sands, with Nubble Lighthouse across the water, then runs north to Story Land and the White Mountains. If the passports aren’t ready, start here.
What we would skip in July and August with young kids: Athens and the Greek islands, where highs run around 90°F and popular ferries sell out. Greece is wonderful in late May, June or September. Our Greece timing guide has the month-by-month.

Where to stay: a checked rental for three of these
One rental each for Wengen, Ponta Delgada and Lagos, reused from our full guides. We stayed in the Iberlagos complex in Lagos; the other two we haven’t stayed in, but they pass our filters. Summer is peak season in all three, so book early.

- 2 baths
- Elevator
- Full kitchen
- Washer and dryer
- High chair
- 7 min to the station
A 7 minute walk from Wengen station, with an elevator, which matters with luggage in a car-free village. About $290 a night, which is cheap for Wengen.
- 2 bedrooms
- 2 baths
- Stairs inside
- Full kitchen
- Washer and dryer
- A/C
- Crib and high chair
- 7 min to the marina
Between the marina and the market, so you can walk to dinner and the harbor. About $180 a night. It is on three levels inside, so expect stairs.
The same complex we booked, with its pool and kids’ pool, and a 2 minute walk down to Dona Ana. It’s the top of the budget and only has 19 reviews so far, but they’re a 9.8.
Ratings and amenities were checked on Vrbo in September and October 2026. Links open Vrbo for 2 adults and 2 kids with no dates set, so prices change once you add dates. See every stay on our approved list.
What families ask us.
What are good family summer vacations from Boston?
Our top pick is the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland, where we went in July with a 1-year-old. The Azores, Iceland and the west coast of Ireland are the other strong summer picks, because all three stay mild when much of Europe is hot, and each has a nonstop from Logan of about 5 to 6 hours.
What are some summer family vacation ideas that aren't a beach week?
The Swiss Alps, with cogwheel trains and cable cars instead of a rental car. Iceland, for waterfalls and near round-the-clock daylight in June. Or a road trip down the west coast of Ireland. All three keep kids outside all day without needing the weather to be hot.
Where in Europe is not too hot for kids in July and August?
Iceland, where summer days run in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, plus Ireland, the Azores and the Swiss Alps, which all stay mild. Athens and much of mainland Greece often run around 90 degrees in August, so we steer families with young kids to late May, June or September there.
What is the shortest flight from Boston to Europe for a summer trip?
The Azores, at about 5 hours nonstop to Ponta Delgada on Azores Airlines, then Iceland at about 5.2 hours to Reykjavik on Icelandair. Dublin is about 6 hours on Aer Lingus, and Zurich about 7.2 hours on SWISS.
Which nonstop flights from Boston only run in summer?
Nice, Milan, Barcelona, Edinburgh and London Gatwick are summer-only nonstops from Logan. Summer is the one season all of them fly, which widens the choice for a July or August trip compared with a February one. Our full list of Logan nonstops shows which routes run all year.
How far ahead should we book a summer family trip abroad?
Flights first, as soon as the schedule opens, which for many international routes is roughly 9 to 11 months out. Lodging right behind, since two-bedroom apartments sell out well before standard doubles, and summer is peak season in every place on this list. More in how far in advance to book.
