Portland, Maine in the fall
with kids.

Portland is the Maine city we fold into a coast trip with the girls: the Old Port is small enough to walk end to end, and there is enough food on those few blocks that a picky eater never turns lunch into a standoff. Fall is when the coast around it turns, a few weeks after the mountains do.

The quick answer

Portland, Maine in the fall,
at a glance.

Go in the first three weeks of October. That catches the coastal color, the last of the seasonal openings and the biggest fall fairs nearby in one weekend.

Timing

When is Portland, Maine in the fall at its best?

Early to mid-October. In most years Maine's foresters report peak color on the southern coast, from Kittery up through Portland, somewhere in the second or third week of October. The ocean keeps the coast mild, so it turns well after the White Mountains and western Maine, which usually peak from late September into early October.

That lag is useful. If you missed the mountains, Portland is a second chance at the same season. The state posts a foliage report every week during the season, and it is worth a look the Wednesday before you drive up.

The catch: a few seasonal things wind down around mid-October, including the museum at Portland Head Light. After that the city is still very much open, just quieter. Late October usually brings leaf drop on the coast, so aim earlier if the color is the point.

Why it works

Why Portland is easy with kids.

The Old Port is compact, and it is a real working waterfront, with fishing boats and ferries instead of a tourist set piece. You can park once and do the whole thing on foot. The food variety is the other reason we like it: with a picky eater, a city with this many options on a few blocks takes the stress out of every meal.

It also fits around other plans. We treat Portland as one day added to a Midcoast trip rather than a destination that needs its own week. Our Maine with kids guide covers how it sits next to Boothbay Harbor and Acadia.

What to do

What should you do in Portland, Maine in the fall with kids?

Pick one outdoor thing and one indoor backup, and leave the rest of the day for the Old Port. These are the three we would build a fall day around. We have researched them; this isn't a firsthand fall itinerary.

Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park

The lighthouse sits in Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, just south of the city. The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset and is free to walk, with metered parking. Kids get open lawns, rocks and old fort ruins to explore, and fall light on the lighthouse is the photo most people come for. The small museum in the keepers' house is seasonal and usually closes around mid-October.

The ferry to Peaks Island

Casco Bay Lines runs from the terminal on Commercial Street out to Peaks Island all year, and the crossing takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. For kids it is a real boat ride at ferry prices, with a view back at the city and the turning trees on the islands. Walk around for an hour and catch a boat back.

If it rains: the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine

It moved to a bigger building at Thompson's Point in 2021 and is built for kids up to about 10, with three floors of hands-on exhibits and a small theater. On a wet October day this is the plan B that saves the trip.

On the calendar

Which fall events are near Portland, Maine?

Three of the bigger Maine fall events sit just north of the city, and any of them turns a Portland weekend into a fall weekend. The Cumberland Fair runs in late September into early October. Downtown Freeport holds its Freeport Fall Festival in early October. In mid-October the Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival lines the L.L.Bean campus in Freeport with lit jack-o'-lanterns, free and on paved paths, so it works with a stroller.

Dates move a little each year. Our 10 Maine fall events page has this season's dates and admission for all of them. Apple picking and pumpkin patches are our own fall habit wherever we are; the orchards around southern Maine fill the same slot.

Close enough to the Old Port that you can walk to dinner and leave the car parked. A two-bedroom rental gives the kids their own room and a kitchen for breakfast.

Is Portland Head Light open in the fall?

The grounds are. Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth is open year-round from sunrise to sunset, and walking the park is free, with metered parking. The small museum in the keepers' house runs seasonally and winds down around mid-October, so check its hours if the museum matters to you.

The Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine at Thompson's Point is the obvious answer. It is built for kids up to about age 10, with three floors of hands-on exhibits and a small theater.

How far is Portland, Maine from Boston?
