The biggest Christmas festivals in New England, one list across all six states: Gilded Age mansions lit up in Newport, a lantern-lit seaport village in Mystic, Santa by lobster boat in Kennebunkport, and Ice Castles once the cold sets in. Every date was checked against the event's own site on October 30, 2026.

Where to stay for a New England holiday weekend
Woodstock is our pick for the middle of the region. For named rentals, here is one that passes our filters near each of the big weekends: North Conway for Ice Castles and the White Mountains, Stowe for A Traditional Christmas, and Kennebunkport for the Prelude. We haven’t stayed in these.
This chalet has one of the deepest review records around North Conway, and the listing says Echo Lake is a walk away.

The Stowe Recreation Path runs right outside, and guests walk it into the village. About $300 a night when we checked.

A restored 1797 house 2 minutes from Dock Square, with a garret the kids can play in, a backyard and a free beach parking permit. About $360 a night, over our budget.
Ratings and amenities were checked on Vrbo in October 2026. The buttons open Vrbo for 2 adults and 2 kids on each town’s event weekend, so you see live prices for that weekend. The Stowe condo opens on Dec 4 to 6 too. The North Conway chalet was booked and the Hovey House needs a longer stay that weekend when we checked on November 2, 2026, so those two open with no dates.

A Forest of Lights
A light walk through the woods at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, with a Snowflake Dome, a glowing spider web and the Canopy Walk. Entry is timed, and VINS recommends the 4:30pm slot for young kids. Adults are $15 and ages 4 to 17 are $9, a bit more over Thanksgiving weekend. Public tickets go on sale November 10. Faneuil Hall Marketplace tree lighting
Boston's first big lighting of the season. Performances start at 2pm and Santa helps light the tree at 6pm sharp. It's free, and three T stops are a short walk away, which beats parking downtown on a Saturday. Official site →
Holidays at the Newport Mansions
Gilded Age mansions dressed for the season. The Breakers and Marble House are open daily (Chateau-sur-Mer on weekends). Sparkling Lights at The Breakers is the evening ticket: about a half-mile lit path on the grounds plus the decorated house, on select nights from 4 to 8pm. Look for Mr. Vanderbilt's tree, trimmed with trains and top hats, and a 15-foot poinsettia tree. Sparkling Lights is $45 for adults and $18 for youth, and under 6 is free. Winterfest Hartford
Free outdoor skating in Bushnell Park, with free skate rentals and free learn-to-skate lessons, which is rare at this size. It opens on November 27, from 11am to 8pm, and rain can close the rink. On Saturday, December 5 there's a learn-to-skate session from 10 to 11am and Santa's Workshop from noon to 3pm, with one free photo per family. The 2025 season drew close to 31,000 skaters. The organizers are also fundraising for this season, so check the site before you drive. Official site →
Lantern Lights: A Mystic Holiday
The event Mystic Seaport used to call Lantern Light Village: a walk through the 19th-century seaport village by lantern light, with a short horse-and-carriage ride included. For 2026 it starts in the afternoon (2 to 8:30pm, timed entry) and runs 15 nights, up from 7. Adults are $42 on Thursdays and Sundays and $48 on Fridays and Saturdays, youth tickets are $30, and kids 3 and under are free. Official site →
Christmas Prelude
Santa arrives by lobster boat on Sunday, December 6, the Hat Parade is Saturday, December 5, and fireworks go up over the cove on Friday, December 11. Most of it is free. Kennebunkport is one of our day trips with the girls. Full details are on our Maine Christmas list. Official site →
Freeport Sparkle Celebration
The Parade of Lights comes down Main Street on Friday, December 4 at 6pm, and Santa arrives at the end to wake the Talking Tree, which kids can sing and tell jokes to on the weekends after. It's free, and it pairs well with a Kennebunkport day. Official site →
A Traditional Christmas in Stowe
A children's lantern parade, ornament and cookie decorating, holiday skating, wagon rides and Santa's arrival in the village. Walking around is free. We've done Stowe with the girls, and it's an easy village to walk with kids. Official site →
First Night Boston
Free New Year's Eve across downtown Boston, with ice sculptures, family activities and a procession from Copley Square to Boston Common. The 2026 schedule hadn't posted when we checked. When it does, look under Family Activities for the before-bedtime events. Official site →
Ice Castles
Hand-built ice tunnels, slides and towers, lit at night, and the one on this list worth a dedicated trip. We've done it with the girls. It opens once it's been cold enough to build, "often around January"; last season it opened December 27, 2025. Strollers aren't allowed, so bring a carrier or a sled. Official site →

We're on the New Hampshire seacoast, so the Maine coast and Boston are the easy days for us. If you're picking a few:
Faneuil Hall, Winterfest Hartford's skating, Kennebunkport, Freeport, Stowe and First Night all cost nothing to walk around.
Winterfest Hartford's free skating with Santa on December 5, the Freeport Talking Tree, or A Forest of Lights at 4:30pm.
Kennebunkport, Stowe and Newport each make a whole weekend. Pair Kennebunkport with Freeport, Stowe with Woodstock's Wassail Weekend the next weekend, or Newport with Mystic.

Is there a good winter event in Connecticut?
Two. Lantern Lights at Mystic Seaport Museum runs 15 afternoons and evenings from December 3 to 23. Winterfest Hartford offers free outdoor skating in Bushnell Park from November 27, with free skate rentals.
What is winter in New England like for a family trip?
Cold, often snowy, and busier with events than people expect. Most holiday light displays run from late November into early January, and Ice Castles usually opens around January. It's dark by late afternoon in December, so plan the day around the daylight.
