Family friendly ski resorts from Boston:
Gunstock to the Jungfrau.

Our girls learned to ski at Gunstock, a mid-sized mountain above Lake Winnipesaukee in the Lakes Region. That is the point of this page. The best family ski resort for a first season is rarely the biggest one; it is the one close enough to go back to every weekend. Here is the short list we would give a friend, from the New Hampshire hill we actually ski to the Swiss valley we know in summer and would love to see under snow.

The quick answer

The best family ski resorts within a drive,
at a glance.

Drive times are from Boston, since that's where most readers start, and they assume normal traffic, not a Friday night in February.

Gunstock is the one we ski with our girls. We have stayed in North Conway and spent summer in the Lauterbrunnen Valley, but the other resorts here are described from the resorts' own materials, ski guides and other research, not from our own ski days. Lift prices, lesson ages and programs change every season, so check each resort's site before you book. Researched October 14, 2026.

How we choose

What makes the best ski resorts for families?

Not vertical feet. For a family with young kids, three things matter more than the trail count: how far the drive is, whether everyone ends up back at the same lodge, and whether the ski school is set up for small children. A mountain that ticks those boxes gets you back on the snow next weekend, which is how kids actually get good.

The bigger resorts have their place, usually a few seasons in, once the kids want more than the beginner area. We would rather a first ski season build confidence than chase vertical, and that rule shaped every pick below.

Book lessons before lodging on school vacation weeks. February vacation week is the busiest stretch of the New England ski season, and kids' lesson spots fill up fast that week. Our school vacation week dates page has the February and April dates.

Where we ski

Gunstock: our family's mountain.

Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford, New Hampshire, is where we ski as a family. It is technically the Lakes Region, not the White Mountains, and it is smaller and less intimidating than the big-name resorts further north. For our girls that was exactly right. A first season should be about getting comfortable, and Gunstock never felt like too much mountain.

The terrain is mostly wide intermediate trails with a smaller beginner area, and the resort runs a ski school and a children's center for kids too young for lessons. Gunstock also lights part of the mountain for night skiing on some evenings and has a tubing hill at the base, which is a good plan for a sibling who isn't skiing yet. On a clear day the views run out over Lake Winnipesaukee. In summer it is the same area as Mount Major, the first real summit both our girls hiked.

New Hampshire

Family ski resorts in New Hampshire, beyond Gunstock.

Cranmore sits right at the edge of North Conway village, and every trail comes back to a single base lodge, so nobody gets lost and lunch is easy to find. It has a reputation for its ski school and a tubing park, and stronger skiers will cover the whole mountain quickly. We have stayed in North Conway with our girls and love the town; we haven't skied Cranmore. The village, the outlets and the kid-friendly breweries are in our North Conway with kids guide.

Waterville Valley markets itself as New Hampshire's family resort, and the layout backs that up: the trails on its two peaks all finish at one base area. It is about 10 miles off I-93, and the resort village has its own lodging, so a weekend can mean parking the car on Friday and not touching it until Sunday.

Bretton Woods, below Mount Washington, is New Hampshire's largest ski area, and much of that acreage is beginner and intermediate terrain rather than steeps. It has a dedicated learning area with its own lift for first-timers. It is the furthest drive of the New Hampshire picks, so it works better as a long weekend than a day trip.

Vermont

Smuggs, Killington and the Vermont option.

Smugglers' Notch, in northern Vermont near Stowe, is the resort most built around kids. Ski school is split by age and then by ability, there is childcare with an introduction to skiing for the youngest, and an indoor Fun Zone for the afternoon the weather turns. It regularly tops the family category in SKI Magazine's reader polls. The tradeoff is distance: at 3.5 to 4 hours, it is a week or a long weekend, not a Saturday.

Killington, about 3 hours away, is the biggest ski mountain in the East and part of the Vermont Kyle grew up in, near Rutland. It is big enough that we would save it for kids who already ski confidently. The rest of that region is in our Vermont with kids guide.

And beyond

When is the Jungfrau worth the flight?

When your kids already ski. The Lauterbrunnen Valley sits inside the Jungfrau ski region, and Wengen, Grindelwald and Murren, the same villages we reach by cable car for summer hiking, all run as ski areas in winter. Swiss International Air Lines flies Boston to Zurich nonstop year-round, so a February vacation week ski trip is a real option.

Be honest with yourself about the cost and the timing. Ski season is peak season in a country that already runs at the high end of our cost ranges, and kids' lesson spots in the region's ski schools fill fast in a fixed school week. Our time there has been summer, so we can speak to the valley, not the slopes. The full plan, flights and lodging included, is in our Switzerland in February vacation week guide.

Book it yourself

Where should a family stay for a New Hampshire ski weekend?

Gunstock works as a day trip, since it is about two hours away. For a weekend with a bigger White Mountains resort, we would base in North Conway, where you can walk to dinner and the shops after a cold day outside.

Stays in North Conway for a ski weekend

We loved the White Mountain Hotel. North Conway puts Cranmore at the edge of town, with more White Mountains ski areas a short drive north. For a rental, search two-bedroom places and check each one against our filters: two real bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a short drive to the lifts.

Links open for 2 adults and 2 kids with no dates set. Ski weekends book up early, so check dates before you settle on a mountain.

Questions

What families ask us.

What are the best family friendly ski resorts near Boston?

For a first season, a smaller New Hampshire mountain about two hours north. Gunstock in Gilford is where we ski as a family. Cranmore in North Conway and Waterville Valley are built around a single base lodge, which makes regrouping with kids easy. Bretton Woods is bigger but still leans gentle. In Vermont, Smugglers' Notch is the resort most built around kids' programs.

What is the best ski resort in New England for beginners with kids?

One that is small enough to build confidence. We started our girls at Gunstock, which is smaller and less intimidating than the big-name resorts further north. Cranmore is another easy first mountain, because every trail comes back to one base lodge at the edge of North Conway.

Which are the best family ski resorts in the US for an East Coast family?

For a family starting from Boston, the honest answer is the ones you can drive to. We haven't skied the big Western resorts with our girls, so we won't rank them. New Hampshire and Vermont have family resorts within two to four hours, and a fly-in ski week is a bigger trip worth saving until the kids are confident.

How far is Gunstock from Boston?

About 2 hours by car in normal winter traffic. Gunstock is in Gilford, New Hampshire, on the Lake Winnipesaukee side of the Lakes Region, which makes it one of the closer family ski areas for a day trip or a single overnight.

Is a Swiss ski week in the Jungfrau region worth it with kids?

For a family that already skis, it can be. Wengen, Grindelwald and Murren all run as ski areas, and Swiss flies Boston to Zurich nonstop year-round. It is peak season and Switzerland is expensive, so book lessons and a self-catering apartment early. We know the valley in summer; we haven't skied it with our girls.
