Cape Cod towns for families:
where to stay.
Fifteen towns share one arm of sand, and the side of the Cape you sleep on decides what kind of beach your kids get: flat, warm bay water or real Atlantic surf. Kyle has been all over the Cape as an adult, but we haven’t taken the girls yet, so this is our best research plus his local knowledge, and we say which is which.
Which Cape Cod town is best for families with young kids?
For toddlers and early walkers, the bay side of Brewster or Dennis: calm water, and low tide leaves wide flats to splash around on. For a Martha’s Vineyard day, Falmouth. For the postcard Main Street, Chatham, at a higher price.
| Town | Region | Drive | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sandwich | Upper Cape | About 1 hr 10 min | The shortest drive, a quiet first trip |
| Falmouth | Upper Cape | About 1.5 hrs | The Martha’s Vineyard ferry, bike paths |
| Hyannis (Barnstable) | Mid Cape | About 1.5 hrs | Restaurants, rainy days, the Nantucket ferry |
| Dennis and Yarmouth | Mid Cape | About 1.5 hrs | Bay-side flats, mini golf and arcades |
| Brewster | Lower Cape | About 1 hr 40 min | Toddlers: tidal flats and freshwater ponds |
| Chatham | Lower Cape | About 1 hr 45 min | Main Street, seals, summer band concerts |
| Wellfleet and Eastham | Outer Cape | About 2 hrs | National Seashore beaches for older kids |
| Provincetown | Outer Cape | About 2.5 hrs | A whale-watch day, not a base with little ones |
Drive times are from Boston, since that’s where most readers start, routed for a weekday with no traffic. A summer Saturday at the bridges is a different trip.
What are the towns on Cape Cod, Massachusetts?
There are 15, and locals sort them into four regions running from the Cape Cod Canal out to the tip. Upper Cape is closest to the bridges, the Outer Cape is the narrow stretch past Orleans.
Shortest drive, quieter, and Falmouth has the Woods Hole ferry to Martha’s Vineyard.
The busiest stretch: most of the restaurants, the Route 28 mini golf strip, and the Nantucket ferries.
The elbow. Calm bay beaches on one side, Nantucket Sound or the ocean on the other.
Most of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Big dunes, big surf, longer drive.
The Cape Cod towns we’d look at with kids.
All research, checked against each town’s own visitor information. Seasonal hours change every year, so confirm anything you’re building a day around.
The ferry to Martha’s Vineyard leaves from Woods Hole, inside Falmouth, so this is the town if an Oak Bluffs carousel day is on the list. The Shining Sea Bikeway runs about 10 miles from North Falmouth to Woods Hole, flat and paved, and Old Silver Beach faces calmer Buzzards Bay water.
On the bay side, the tide here goes out a very long way, leaving sand flats and warm shallow pools that small kids can wander for hours. Nickerson State Park adds freshwater ponds for a no-waves swim, and the Cape Cod Rail Trail passes through town. Quieter, with fewer restaurants.
Dennis’s bay beaches, Mayflower Beach among them, have the same low-tide flats as Brewster. Route 28 on the south side is the Cape’s mini golf, ice cream and arcade stretch, the kind of thing Kyle means when he says the Cape has a super New England vibe for kids. The Rail Trail starts here too.
A walkable Main Street, a lighthouse, and the fish pier, where seals often hang around the boats. On summer Friday nights the town band plays free concerts in Kate Gould Park, a long-running Chatham tradition. Oyster Pond Beach is calm and small-kid friendly. Rentals cost more here than anywhere mid-Cape.
The Cape’s busiest village: the most restaurants, the most to do on a rainy day, and the ferries to Nantucket. Handy, but it trades beach-town quiet for traffic.
The first town over the Sagamore Bridge, so the least time in the car. Heritage Museums and Gardens has an antique carousel, and a boardwalk crosses the marsh to Town Neck Beach.
The Outer Cape, for older kids: Eastham, Wellfleet, Truro and Provincetown sit inside or beside the Cape Cod National Seashore. The ocean beaches there are beautiful and rough, better for kids who can handle waves. Wellfleet still has a summer drive-in movie theater, and Provincetown’s whale watches leave from MacMillan Pier. We’d treat Provincetown as a day out rather than a base with little ones.
Is the bay side or the ocean side of Cape Cod better for kids?
The bay side, for young kids. Beaches on Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound are calmer and warmer than the Atlantic beaches of the National Seashore, which have real surf and colder water. Our Cape Cod with kids guide goes deeper on the beaches and the Martha’s Vineyard day.
On the bay side, check a tide chart before you pick your beach time. At low tide in Brewster or Dennis the water can be a long walk away, which is wonderful for tide-pool hunting and less so if you hauled the whole beach setup for a swim.
Kid friendly resorts on Cape Cod, or a rental?
Cape Cod does have kid friendly resorts, mostly around Hyannis, Falmouth and Brewster, with pools and some with their own beach. We haven’t stayed in one, so we won’t name one.
With two kids, our own rule almost everywhere is a two-bedroom rental with a full kitchen, so naps and early bedtimes don’t put the whole family in one dark room. On the Cape that also means a cottage a short walk from a bay beach, which is hard for a resort to beat with small kids.
Kyle’s one warning: the Cape gets very crowded in summer, and everyone gets on and off over the same two bridges. Prepare yourselves for the traffic at both ends of the trip. Leave early on arrival day, and don’t plan anything tight around a summer Saturday drive home.
Where should a family stay on Cape Cod?
Pick the side of the Cape first, then the town. Chatham covers the Lower Cape, and Oak Bluffs is the Martha’s Vineyard option if you’d rather sleep on the island than take the ferry for a day.

Two-bedroom rentals in Chatham, or on the Vineyard
We haven’t stayed on the Cape with the girls, so there are no named picks here, only searches. Chatham is the base we’d book for a Lower Cape week, and Oak Bluffs is the Martha’s Vineyard option. Book early for July and August.
Links open Vrbo for 2 adults and 2 kids, two bedrooms minimum, no dates set. Vrbo can’t filter by kitchen, so check the listing before you book.

Which Cape Cod town is best for families with young kids?
For toddlers and early walkers, look at the bay side of Brewster or Dennis, where Cape Cod Bay is calm and low tide leaves wide sand flats to explore. If you want a Martha's Vineyard day, Falmouth puts you closest to the Woods Hole ferry. Chatham is the classic Main Street town, and it costs more.
Are there kid friendly resorts on Cape Cod?
Yes. The larger family resorts with pools and beach access are mostly around Hyannis, Falmouth and Brewster. We haven't stayed in one, so we don't name them. With two kids, our own rule is a two-bedroom rental with a kitchen, so naps and early bedtimes don't put the whole family in one dark room.
How far are the Cape Cod towns from Boston?
With no traffic, Sandwich is just over an hour from Boston, Falmouth and Hyannis about 1.5 hours, Chatham about 1 hour 45 minutes, and Provincetown about 2.5 hours. Summer Fridays and Saturdays are slower, mostly at the Sagamore and Bourne bridges over the Cape Cod Canal.
Is the bay side or the ocean side of Cape Cod better for kids?
The bay side, for young kids. Beaches on Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound are calmer and warmer than the Atlantic beaches of the National Seashore, which have real surf and colder water. Older kids who can handle waves will love the ocean side for a day.
When is the best time to stay on Cape Cod with kids?
Summer, for the beaches and because almost everything is open. It is also when the Cape is most crowded, so book rentals early for July and August and plan your drive around the bridge traffic. Late June and early September are quieter if your school calendar allows it.
Keep exploring.
