Flights from Boston to Punta Cana
with kids

Punta Cana has more nonstops from Logan than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean: JetBlue twice a day, plus American and Delta, all year. The flight is about 4 hours. The catch for families is paperwork, since everyone, babies included, needs a passport.

The quick answer

Boston to Punta Cana, at a glance.

We haven't taken the girls to the Dominican Republic, so this is a flight guide, not a destination guide. The route facts come from the Logan nonstop list we keep for every direct flight from Boston, and the kid tactics are the ones we use on every flight.

The route

Is there a nonstop flight from Boston to Punta Cana?

Yes, and it runs all year. Three airlines fly it, and JetBlue alone has two flights a day, so if a flight cancels you have a real shot at getting on the next one the same day. That matters more with kids than any fare difference.

That depth is why we rank Punta Cana with Aruba as the strongest true Caribbean options from Logan in our list of warm places to fly nonstop in February. Some of the other islands on that list only fly on Saturdays in winter, which leaves no slack if the one flight goes wrong.

Time in the air

How long is the flight from Boston to Punta Cana?

About 4 hours nonstop, the same as Boston to San Juan. That is one movie, a snack and a nap for most kids, and it is a daytime flight, so nobody has to sleep sitting up.

Punta Cana doesn't change its clocks. In summer it is on Boston time, and from November to March it is one hour ahead, so a morning departure still lands with most of the afternoon left for the pool.

Paperwork

What kids need to fly to Punta Cana.

A passport each and an e-Ticket each. That's the whole list for most families, but both have to be done before you get to Logan.

  • Passports for everyone. The Dominican Republic is a foreign country, so even a baby needs their own. For kids under 16 both parents usually have to sign off in person, so start early. Our guide to getting a child's passport in New England covers where to apply.
  • The e-Ticket. A free online entry and exit form, one per traveler, filled out on the Dominican government site, eticket.migracion.gob.do. Some sites charge a fee to fill it out for you; they are third parties, not the government.
  • Check passport rules before you book. Entry rules change, so read the US State Department's Dominican Republic page for current passport validity rules before you buy the fares.

If passports are the sticking point, San Juan and St. Thomas are the two Boston nonstops that need none. Our Puerto Rico scorecard covers the same 4-hour flight with no paperwork at all.

How we'd fly it

Flying to Punta Cana with a baby or toddler.

We always bought the baby a seat. We drove the stroller to the gate, gate-checked it, and carried the car seat on board to buckle the baby in. That's how we'd fly this route with a baby too.

A lap infant is allowed, but even on a 4-hour flight a baby buckled into their own car seat sleeps better, and you get both hands back. We wrote up the whole routine, and why we never flew a lap infant, in flying with an infant: lap child or a seat.

At Logan, check the terminal on your boarding pass before you leave the house. Most international flights leave from Terminal E, where we eat at Monica's Mercato near Gate E11 before boarding, but not every airline does. Our Logan guide has the map to pull up first. On the way home you clear US customs at Logan, so leave a little extra time if you have a connection or a long drive after.

Timing

Booking flights for a school vacation week.

February and April vacation weeks are when every New England family wants the same Saturday flights south. Book those weeks early and compare a few departure days, since a Friday or Sunday departure can price very differently from Saturday.

Outside the vacation weeks, the twice-daily JetBlue schedule means there is usually room to be flexible. January sits between both school breaks and is the quietest of the winter months on the Caribbean routes.

Questions

What families ask us.

Are there nonstop flights from Boston to Punta Cana?

Yes, year-round. JetBlue flies Boston to Punta Cana nonstop twice a day, and American and Delta fly it too, so it has more Boston nonstops than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean.

How long is the flight from Boston to Punta Cana?

About 4 hours nonstop, roughly the same as Boston to San Juan. Punta Cana does not change its clocks, so it is on Boston time in summer and one hour ahead in winter.

Do kids need a passport to fly to Punta Cana?

Yes. Every traveler needs a passport, including babies, because the Dominican Republic is a foreign country. If you want a passport-free beach trip from Boston, San Juan and St. Thomas are the two nonstops that need none.

What is the Dominican Republic e-Ticket?

A free online entry and exit form that every traveler, kids included, fills out on the Dominican government site, eticket.migracion.gob.do. Sites that charge a fee for it are third parties, not the government.

Should we buy a seat for a baby on the Punta Cana flight?

We always did. We bought the baby a seat, gate-checked the stroller and buckled the car seat in on board, which is how we would fly this route with a baby too. A lap infant is allowed, but four hours goes faster with both hands free.
