Places to visit in April,
with kids, nonstop from Boston.
February vacation is about getting warm. April vacation is the week Europe opens back up: parks turning green, tulips outside Amsterdam, whales passing the Azores, and none of August's lines. These are the places we'd point a New England family to that week, ranked by how little can go wrong.
April vacation 2027 is Monday 19 to Friday 23 April, a Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 travel window.
What are the best places to travel in April with kids?
Paris, then Rome, then Amsterdam with a train to Bruges. All three are nonstop from Logan, mild enough to walk all day, and well short of their summer crowds. If your family would rather have a beach, Puerto Rico is about a 4-hour flight and needs no passport.
| Top pick | Paris: about 7 hours overnight, nonstop all year, highs around 60°F |
|---|---|
| Best for history | Rome, and in 2027 April vacation misses Easter (March 28) |
| Only-in-April | Tulips at Keukenhof near Amsterdam; migrating whales off the Azores |
| Warm, no passport | Puerto Rico, about 4 hours |
| Think twice | Switzerland, where lifts close in late April |
The one school week
that points east.
In February we rank by passport, flight length and flights a week, and the Caribbean wins. In April the same three questions point at Europe, because the weather that matters with kids changes from "is it warm" to "can we walk all day without anyone melting down."
Around 60°F in Paris and a little warmer in Rome is the best walking temperature there is with small legs. The Atlantic is still cold, so this is a week for parks, trains and old streets, not for swimming.
Europe's heat and long lines belong to July and August. In 2027 the Massachusetts April week also lands three weeks after Easter, so Rome is past its busiest religious week.
Overnight flights to Europe leave near bedtime and land in the morning. Even so, all four of us usually still need a nap on arrival, so we book the room from the night before and walk straight in.
Spring break family vacations from Boston,
ranked for April.
Ranked by resilience first: how often the route flies, how long the flight is, and whether April weather helps or works against you there.
The best-weather school week Paris gets. Highs around 60°F, the gardens greening up, and three airlines flying it daily from Logan, so the fare holds up better than thinner routes and a cancelled flight is a delay rather than a lost trip. Kailah's children's book, Rosie in Paris, grew out of our own time there.
When to goApril sits inside Italy's best window, and in 2027 Easter is March 28, so the week misses the Easter crowds. We use Rome as a one-week home base and do almost everything else by train. Delta and ITA fly it nonstop seasonally, so confirm the summer schedule has started for your dates.
The tulip week. Peak bloom at the Keukenhof gardens usually comes mid-April, so April vacation catches the later half of the season; check the bloom report before you build a day around it. Delta, KLM and JetBlue all fly Amsterdam nonstop, and Bruges is about three hours by train with one change in Brussels.
The shortest transatlantic flight from Logan, and the only pick here where April is the headline season: migrating whales, blue whales included, pass roughly March through May. Expect around 61°F, showers and very green hills. Treat it as a whales, hot springs and viewpoints week, and choose a larger boat for younger kids.
April vacation is the Iceland week we'd pick for younger kids: long days, quiet roads, and weather that still swings between winter and spring. Icelandair flies it about twice a day all year. Our own Iceland trip was in September with a baby, so the April read is research plus that trip.
Works for an Athens-heavy trip, when walking the Acropolis all day is comfortable rather than brutal. Many island hotels are still closed or just opening, and Delta's nonstop runs roughly April to October, so check it has started. Orthodox Easter 2027 is May 2, after the week.
April is kinder to Lisbon's hills than a hot August is. The Algarve's sea is too cold for most kids until summer, so split the week with Lisbon and treat the coast as cliff walks rather than beach days.
The one we'd skip: Switzerland in April. Skiing winds down around Easter and many lifts close for their spring maintenance break, so you land between seasons.
Spring vacation ideas for families
who want a beach.
Some families need sun more than they need a museum, and that's a fair call after a New England March. The February logic still holds: the Caribbean nonstops from Logan keep flying through April vacation.
Still our first warm pick. One honest catch: April is the start of the rainy-season transition, and April vacation falls in the later, showerier half of the month. Short afternoon showers rarely derail a day. We went in November, and three days in San Juan then Vieques is the trip we'd book again.
St. Thomas is the other passport-free option. Every BermudAir winter route and every JetBlue Saturday-only winter Caribbean route runs through 1 May 2027, so Aruba, Turks and Caicos and the rest all cover April vacation. Our winter list ranks them.

What families ask us.
What are the best places to visit in April with kids from Boston?
Paris first: nonstop all year on three airlines, highs around 60°F and the parks greening up. Rome and Amsterdam come next, then the Azores for whales. If your family wants a beach instead, Puerto Rico is about a 4-hour flight with no passport needed.
What is the best spring break destination for families from Boston?
For Massachusetts families, spring break is the April vacation week, and that week is Europe's shoulder season. Paris is the best all-round spring break destination for families from Logan because it flies nonstop every day of the year, so a cancellation costs hours rather than the trip.
What are the best spring break places for families without passports?
Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. Both are domestic flights from Boston, so there are no passports and no customs line coming home. Puerto Rico has far more flights a week, which matters on a school vacation week when a missed flight is hard to replace.
Is a spring break family vacation in Europe too cold in April?
Not for a city trip. Paris runs around 60°F and Rome is milder still, which is walking weather rather than beach weather. The Algarve and the Azores sea are too cold for most kids in April, so plan Portugal around Lisbon and the Azores around whales and hot springs.
Where should families not go in April?
Switzerland is the one we would think twice about. Skiing winds down around Easter and many mountain lifts close for maintenance in late April, so you get neither the snow nor the summer trails. Most Greek islands are also still waking up, which is why April Greece should be Athens-heavy.
When should you book family spring break vacations from Boston?
Earlier than feels reasonable, because every family in the state is bidding for the same eight days. If you have to choose an order, book the ground first: a two-bedroom rental in a good neighborhood is scarcer that week than airline seats are.
